LECITHIN

Effect of pectin, lecithin, and antacid feed supplements (Egusin®) on gastric ulcer scores, gastric fluid pH and blood gas values in horses

This study looked at how different feed supplements affect stomach health in horses, especially in relation to gastric ulcers, a common digestive problem in performance and pleasure horses. The researchers tested two commercial supplements—Egusin 250® and Egusin SLH®—which include ingredients like pectin and lecithin that are thought to protect the stomach.

The goal was to see whether these supplements could reduce ulcer formation, improve digestion, and support stomach function when horses were fed a diet that might otherwise encourage ulcers. The results showed that the supplements helped reduce the severity of stomach ulcers and supported normal gastric function compared with horses that did not receive the supplements.

In simple terms: adding specific pectin- and lecithin-based feed supplements to a horse’s diet may help protect the stomach lining, potentially lower the risk of ulcers, and support overall gut health—especially in horses exposed to stressors or diets that make ulcers more likely.
