MARSHMALLOW ROOT
Marshmallow Root Supports Immune Balance and Reduces Oxidative Stress
This study looked at marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) and a marshmallow-based herbal product to understand how they support the body during throat irritation, cough, and inflammation.
Researchers found that marshmallow root extract helped protect immune cells from inflammation and oxidative stress, two key processes that can worsen irritation in the throat and airways. The extract reduced the release of inflammatory signals while also lowering harmful oxidative activity inside the cells.
In addition, marshmallow root supported the natural movement and repair activity of immune cells, which is important for healing irritated tissues. These effects were comparable to, and in some cases stronger than, a common anti-inflammatory medication—without harming the cells.
In simple terms, the study supports what marshmallow root has been used for traditionally:
soothing irritated throat tissues, calming inflammation, and supporting the body’s natural healing response, which helps explain its effectiveness for dry cough and mucous membrane irritation.
